It has been nearly six months since my engagement and I have been eagerly and anxiously gathering ideas, inspiration, advice, and pictures of all things wedding (see my virtual wedding pinboard here). Now that we have the date set and the venue confirmed, I have been focusing my energy on centerpieces, bridesmaid dresses, cakes, and decor. Throughout my wedding planning process, I came to realize how extremely expensive everything wedding related is! Luckily I have found several creative and penny-pinching ideas that will make your special day look like a million bucks without the heavy price tag.
I have always loved candles. They bring such tranquility and elegance to any environment. I always knew I wanted tons of candlelight at my wedding and thankfully this happens to be a huge money saver when it comes to centerpieces and overall wedding decor. Candles are much cheaper than flowers yet they create a very intimate and sophisticated ambiance. Try substituting expensive floral centerpieces with floating candles and votives to create a serene and unique centerpiece.
Making your own bridal and/or bridesmaid bouquets will save you lots of money and will also be a fun and creative project. Click here to learn how to create a beautiful DIY peony (my favorite) bouquet.
Rent your bridesmaid dresses:
Another budget friendly bridesmaid dress alternative is to rent it! Visit Rent The Runway for hundreds of designer dresses for all shapes and sizes at a fraction of the price. They even have a Weddings section with a fabulous variety of casual, formal, traditional, and non traditional bridesmaid dress options. The site even offers rentals on designer jewelry and accessories. It’s your one stop bridesmaid shop!
Let them eat (cup) cake!
You can cut costs by offering cupcakes to your guests in place of a high-priced tiered wedding cake and eliminate a cake cutting fee. Cupcakes are not only an affordable alternative, you can also display them very creatively.
I am constantly perusing wedding blogs and websites and I recently stumbled upon a unique and cost-effective decor idea: Paper lanterns. Ordinarily I wouldn’t have thought of this on my own, but after viewing pics of wedding venues decorated with colorful or monochromatic paper lanterns, I was pleasantly surprised how chic and original they looked. Not only are they a stylish decor option, they are completely economical (as low at $0.80 each)! Visit Luna Bazaar for a variety of paper lantern styles, sizes, and colors.
