It’s hard to believe that earlier this month Albuquerque temperatures plumeted to the single digits and just last week we reached nearly 70 degrees. While the weather can’t seem to decide which season it is, I am ready for the sunny spring season to arrive. Winter is my favorite season of all but I always find myself suffering from spring fever and anxiously awaiting the warmer months to emerge. To welcome the season of renewal I have added little touches of colorful floral arrangements around the spa as well as some unique accent pieces to liven things up. 🙂
My mother has always been a dynamite interior decorator and is able to make a haven of any space. She was the brains and creative energy behind the elegant and chic decor of Broadway Skin & Body Retreat. Her home, located in the quaint mountain town of Monument, CO is the perfect escape from the huslte and bustle of the city and is my favorite home away from home when I need a relaxing getaway. I thought I would share pics of her shabby chic mountain oasis. Her home always gives me decorative inspiration for my own living space and maybe it will give you decorative motivation to recreate your own peaceful oasis as well. 🙂
Date night is the perfect opportunity to model a new outfit, killer heels, and a unique make-up palette. Whether date night is spent with your girlfriends, a stranger, or your longtime love, you can invoke your inner bombshell or girl next door by switching up your make-up routine. Here are my favorite make-up palettes for a night on the town.
Smokey Eyes: This is my favorite make-up look and is ideal for all eye colors. This is the perfect palette to emphasize the windows to your soul.
To recreate Julia’s smokey eyes:
* Apply a taupe or soft plum hue on the eye lid, not extending beyond the crease (try Aveda Petal Essence Eye Color in Aura)
*Apply a dark accent color along the crease of the eye extending to the outer corner of the lid creating a winged effect. This will make your eyes appear larger (try Shadowy Lady matte eye shadow by MAC).
*Line your upper and lower lash line with a charcoal or black eye liner pencil. Then gently smear a dab of charcoal shadow along the lower lash line for the smokey effect.
*Remember to balance out the overall look with muted cheeks and lips. Use a bronzer or peachy blush (try Bare Minerals blush in Laughter) and a matte nude lip color (try MAC lipstick in High Tea). Let the eyes be the focal point.
Red Lips: This romantic look is perfect for Valentine’s Day
To recreate Lauren’s sultry red pout:
*Line your lips with a lip pencil (try NARS Velvelt Lip Pencil)
*Fill in your lips with your favorite red lipstick (try Clinique Long Last Lipstick in Merlot)
*Be sure to blend the lip liner and lipstick so there is no obvious line surrounding your lips
*Lightly add a hint of a plumping gloss in the center of your bottom lip for extra fullness and sheen (try DiorKiss Liscious Lip Plumping Gloss in Pineapple Cocktail)
*Keep eyes simple. I love the frosty silver shade Lauren is wearing in this photo (try Bare Minerals Eye Color in Snow)
Pretty in Pink: I love this shimmery pink palette. This is perfect for those who prefer a more natural look.
To recreate Kate’s peachy pink hues:
*Choose three eye shadow colors with peach, pink, and plum tones for your base color, eye lid color, and crease color (try Smashbox Eye Shadow Trio in Multi Flash)
*Apply a shimmery bronzer on cheeks and T-zone for a dewy, healthy glow (try Laura Mervier Shimmer Bloc)
*Finish off the look with a sheer, shimmery lip gloss (try this)
It seems we are constantly bombarded by new beauty tricks, techniques, do’s and don’ts, traditional and nontraditional skincare remedies. So I thought I would reveal my opinions on whether some common beauty tricks are fact or faux.
More is better: Faux
The “more is better” philosophy is definitely faux in practically every situation. In relation to skincare, applying more of a product does not make it better. For example, you don’t want to apply more than the necessary amount of anti-ageing night cream because you could end up with a breakout. You also don’t want to wash your face more than twice a day because it can be over stimulating for your skin causing sensitivity, irritation, and dryness. Stick to the recommended dose and daily application of your skincare products for best results.
Beauty Sleep: Fact
Recent research has shown a direct correlation between sleep and perceptions of attractiveness and health (See research details here). In the past when I have been overwhelmed with work, school, and other obligations, I would often tell myself, “I can sleep when I die” to justify my sleep deprivation. However, getting the appropriate amount of sleep is not only essential for your beauty regime, but for your overall health and wellbeing. Most of us don’t perform at work or school as well when we are sleep deprived but lack of sleep in the long run can cause a plethora of serious health conditions including obesity, depression, and hypertension (see more long term sleep deprivation facts here.)
Certain skincare products can shrink your pores: Faux
Unfortunately, you can’t actually shrink the size of your pores. There are several products out there that can make your pores appear smaller but pore size is genetic and cannot be reversed. However, you can help your pores look smaller by exfoliating regularly. This will clear dead surface cells and excess oil that can seep into your pores, clogging them which make them more noticeable and appear larger.
Your sleep position may cause wrinkles: Fact
As much as I want to encourage more beauty sleep, be aware that the position that you sleep in may cause your skin to develop “sleep lines.” If you often sleep on your stomach or side, over time this may result in sleep lines in your face due to creases and wrinkles in your sheets and pillow cases against your skin.
You only need suncscreen when the sun is out: Faux
Even on cloudy days it is important to apply a sunscreen to your face. Despite the appearance of an overcast day, the sun’s damaging UV rays are still in full swing. A daily moisturizer with SPF is a skincare essential.
Preparation H cures puffy eyes: Fact and Faux
Women get complimented on their eyes more than any other body part or facial feature so it is no wonder that we are willing to go to extremes to enhance and repair our finest feature. Applying the hemorroid cream, Preparation H, is a popular quick fix among celebrities for curing puffy eyes. The phenylephrine in this cream constricts the delicate blood vessels under your eyes, squeezing the fluid out and reducing the puffiness. Overall, this is a temporary solution and should not be applied on a regular basis as it may result in eye irritation and cause the blood vessels to become more dilated.
The more expensive the product the better the results: Fact and Faux
Despite the global recession, our desire to look and feel attractive has fueled the billion dollar beauty industry despite the hard economic times. There are thousands of beauty brands and products on the market all claiming to do the same thing-make you look more youthful and attractive. But which ones really work? And do the most expensive products provide greater results? Here are my thoughts on this…I think you can find great products and get great results by staying somewhere in the middle of cheap and expensive. Usually the less expensive the product the more diluted the ingredients and the more preservatives and fillers, which in the end is not going to give you he results you want. However, the most expensive products may have more concentrated ingredients and less or no preservatives at all, but many times you are paying more for branding and packaging than for the product itself. I only invest in skincare products that are preservative and paraben free and generally with the fewest ingredients. Try skincare products like this, this and this. They are gentle, paraben free and won’t break the bank.
It’s ok to sleep in your make-up: Faux
You should never, ever, ever sleep in your make-up. Not even with make-up that claims is safe to sleep in. When you go to bed without washing your face you are transferring all of the dirt, oil, and bacteria that have accumulated on your face onto your pillow cases and bed sheets. So, even if you wash your face the following night you are still exposing your skin to the bacteria that is now covering your sheets and pillow case from the night before. No matter how tired I am at the end of the day, I always muster enough energy to wash my face and apply my night cream. You will thank yourself in the morning. 🙂
Today is the first day in a long time that it actually feels like winter in Albuquerque. So far my favorite season has been quite mild and has felt more like fall than winter. I spent Sunday afternoon snow shoeing in the Sandia Mountains with my boyfriend, his sister, and our dog. It was so peaceful with absolutely beautiful views, not to mention a hell of a workout! My experience snow shoeing just reminded me why I love winter so much! Now with the snow currently falling and temperatures dropping, there is no other place I’d rather be than at the spa! Weather like this is best admired from a warm and cozy indoor sanctuary. Here are my favorite wintertime spa treatments available all year round here.
